As referenced by political opponents due to the Erie Canal lead supporter New York Governor DeWitt Clinton. Construction began on first 15 miles from Rome to Utica and completed in 1825. The canal was the 1st navigable waterway connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the upper Great Lakes. Today the canal measures 351 miles and has 35 locks.
