Essence of Essex

6 miles up CT river, Essex was attacked by the British during the War of 1812. Called the “Pearl Harbor” of the war, 28 vessels were burnt worth $200K (at the time when houses were $1K). Local myth states the town wasn’t burnt as a favor to a local merchant who greeted the British with a secret Masonic handshake.
